San Miguel de Allende is all about Gastronomy

San Miguel de Allende lives up to its reputation as being one of the cities with the best food scene in all of Mexico.

This theory is reinforced by an open secret that the residents of this Magic Town keep: best places to eat, are mercados and street eateries.

Proof of this is the Ignacio Ramírez Market, where the colors and aromas are the hallmark in its food area.

Within the market, there is a good number of street vendor stalls in every corner, prepare any type of dish that you fancy. Esquites, tacos, chiles en nogada and, most of all, all kinds of typical sweets such as crystallized strawberries and the famous tumbagones, crispy flour rolls covered with icing sugar, as well as raw corn atole and much more.

Finally, there are established places with defined gastronomic lines. Restaurants like La Grotta, where they sell handmade pizzas and cooked in a wood-fired oven, which you can try with their special sauce that is spectacular.

Bugambilia, with its traditional chiles en nogada.

Chocolates y Churros San Agustín, the first churrería of the city located in an old mansion of the XVIII century, where you will taste the most delicious hot chocolate along with the best churros.

Just wander down any of the idyllic cobblestone streets in San Miguel de Allende’s colonial town center, and you may find yourself in a quaint garden patio among diners relaxing with margaritas, sampling some fancy gourmet dinner at a steakhouse; or maybe you’ll end up delighitng your senses at a taco stand in the middle of downtown street in good old San Miguel de Allende.

Like Forrest Gump’s mother used to say: San Miguel is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”…
