Not all trips consist of taking a “Selfie” or practicing extreme sports. There are trips where the emotion consists of walking through extensive vineyards and talking with people who know in depth the processes of wine making. This will make you aware of the history behind the flavors and, in the end, the sensations will last forever.
This type of trip exists in just a few select locations in Mexico, and it is present in the main wine regions of Baja California, Querétaro and Guanajuato. And talking specifically of San Miguel de Allende, a route to learn about wine culture has just been created.
You probably haven’t heard about SMA as a large wine production area, but in its surroundings there are many small wineries, recognized by the use of artisanal methods. In addition, San Miguel has a deep relationship with gastronomy, culture and hedonism.
A new wine route will take place from May 11 to 13. It is run by Proyecto Vino, a tour operator that promotes interest in the universe of this drink through travel.
The wine
The trip includes a visit to the main vineyards in the area, such as the Cuna de Tierra winery, which is 40 minutes from San Miguel. This winery boasts a recognition of the Biennial of Mexican Architecture; it has a viewpoint that allows to appreciate its vineyards and has become a benchmark for wine tourism in Mexico, featuring tours, workshops and tastings. The house mainly makes red wines.
The added value of the trip is to have the opportunity to meet important places that do not appear frequently in the itineraries. One of them is Viñedos San Lucas, totally adapted to welcome tourists.
The complex boasts a hotel and spa. In summer its landscape is dyed lilac by the lavender harvest season in the region. Visits to the wine industry usually include tastings with cheese platters and olive oil made onsite.
The property is located on the outskirts of the city, just a 20-minute drive from downtown SMA.
In Queretaro
The Queretaro wineries that stand out in this program are De Cote and Puerta del Lobo.
The first offers bike tours through its vineyards. In 2014, its Tempranillo-Shiraz Gran Reserva label was awarded at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, France.
At Puerta de Lobo they can create your personalized bottle of wine. A theme park with artisanal wine school and ecological reserve is being built on its premises.
In San Miguel
To test your new knowledge, you have to go to Centanni, an Italian restaurant with an extensive wine list and working closely with local producers. It is right across the street from the Church of the Immaculate Conception, in the historic center.
It is also worth eating at San Mike, a culinary space that opened in December last year. It is a three-story house, which brings together three different proposals: a traditional taquería, a piano bar and a terrace.
