During the first four months of this year, an average of six people have been murdered in Guanajuato, twice the number of intentional homicides recorded in the same period of 2017, a year that had already been considered one of the most violent in the state.

2018 is also marked by the assassinations of state and municipal police officers, and the figures place the state in third place at the national level for intentional homicides, only below Baja California (834) and Guerrero (770), given that Guanajuato reached 768 cases during the first 120 days of the year, as reported by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).

To make matters worse, Guanajuato is the first in the country in homicides committed with firearms, because in eight out of 10 deaths perpetrated a weapon of this type was used, even exceeding Baja California, where in seven out of 10 murders a firearm was used.

Several state and municipal officials have considered it necessary to increase penalties against firearms bearers, so they can not face their processes in freedom, stating that these individuals are dangerous to society. According to the records of the SESNSP, the use of this type of weapons in homicides has quadrupled in the last four years, since they were used in 179 crimes in 2015, and now they have been present in 642 of the total of this type of crimes.

The municipality of León leads in intentional homicides during the first four months of the year, with 103 open investigation files by the Public Ministry;  Irapuato with 93; Celaya with 68; Salamanca with 66, and Silao with 43.

It is worth menitioning that all 5 municipalities are located within Guanajuato’s industrial corridor.
