Azafrán Festival: Spanish seasoning comes to San Miguel de Allende

The aromas and flavors of the Spanish cuisine filled the atmosphere of Hacienda San José Lavista, located just seven kilometers away from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, on the occasion of the second edition of the paella and wine festival that honors one of the most precious spices in world cuisine: “Azafrán” (Saffron).

The paella contest was once again the cornerstone of the festival, bringing together a group of cooks not only from the region, but also from other states, such as Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro and Mexico City, who showed their skills and knowledge to prepare the Valencian dish par excellence.

Chef Vicente Torres, originally from Ibiza and awarded with a Michelin star, was part of the jury made up of personalities from the gastronomic, wine and business scene of SMA.

The Azafrán Award for Best Paella went to El Asador Catalán from San Miguel de Allende, led by Chef Joan Casas and his son Jordi; this Paella has as one of its main features the delicious pork chamorro.

The People’s Choice Award went to the black rice prepared by chef Lupita Arellano and Alex Alcántara, from El Tupinamba restaurant, also located in San Miguel de Allende.

The wines of San José Lavista and the presence of brands such as Stella Artois, Singleton, Ron Zacapa and Don Julio, from Diageo, as well as Ron La Gloria and craft products from Cerveceros de México, delighted more than 800 “foodies” who attended the event.
