The agave industry grows exponentially in Guanajuato

“The agave industry has grown exponentially in the state of Guanajuato, as 30 percent of the total agave production nationwide comes from our state,” announced authorities of the municipality of Silao and representatives of the State Secretariat of Tourism of Guanajuato (Sectur).

“Guanajuato is now positioned as a benchmark in the country in the production of this type of plant and from which it derives endless beverages; mainly tequila and mezcal, and the state has already eight brands of this type of products,” authorities continued.

The production of mezcal in the state of Guanajuato is 17,000 liters a year, we have the designation of origin in San Felipe and San Luis de la Paz, mezcaleras haciendas that can be visited and are part of touristic tours, “said José Luis Cabrejos, official of the Ministry of Tourism of Guanajuato.

“As for the types of mezcal that are made in the state of Guanajuato, spicy mezcal, salmiana, blue agave, and centennial agave stand out, and the municipalities where more agave is produced are Pénjamo, Huanímaro, Abasolo, Romita, Cuerámaro, Manuel Doblado and Purísima del Rincón”, Cabrejos continued.

“From 2012 to 2018 the municipalities of Pénjamo have planted 7 hectares of agave, Huanímaro 1.2, Abasolo 1.8, Romita 17.7, Cuerámaro 600, Manuel Doblado 4,500 and Purísima del Rincón 3,300”, assured the official of the Ministry of Tourism of Guanajuato.

“In Guanajuato you can find tequila, mezcal, pulque, wine, craft beer as well as other agave distillates”, Cabrejos said.

The official assured that 30% of agave production at national level occurs in the state of Guanajuato.

The Tourism Secretariat and the municipality of Silao, are organizaing the Sixth Festival of the Agave, 23 and 24 September in Guanajuato’s Bicentennial Park, where people can find agave related products, including coal made of agave waste.
