Crime of the Century in Guanajuato: Armed men steal armored truck with 118 million pesos (5.9 million USD)

APASEO EL GRANDE, GTO .- Last week, an armored truck of the SEPSA securities company with 118 million pesos (5.9 million USD). The vehicle was ambushed by armed individuals on the Querétaro-Celaya highway.

The event was recorded the morning of Friday Dec. 14, and it was reported that, hours later, the truck was found empty in the community of Rincón de Centeno de Juventino Rosas..

Research data indicated that the truck of the company Sepsa S.A de C.V left Queretaro’s Carrillo Puerto neighborhood and had as destination Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos in Celaya’s Colonia Renacimiento.

The convoy consisted of three vehicles of the company and only one of them was armored (the one carrying the money), so the other two were supposed to be guarding it.

However, as the vehicles were traveling near the municipality of Apaseo el Grande, between the communities of La Purísima and La Palma, dozens of armed individuals on board vehicles intercepted them, made them stop and violently assaulted the security guards. Two of the guards were reported injured from the beat up they took from the assailants.

The criminals took the truck with the money along with three security guards who are still missing, they also took two shotguns and two .38 revolvers.

Given this situation, a strong search operation was consducted by agents of the Public Security Forces of the State, Federal Police and the Mexican Army. The vehicle was found in a ravine located between two hills (the GPS, allowed its location), the money was not found.

Some people speculate on social networks that it may be an “inside job”, and that the three missing guards may be involved.
