The Secretary of Tourism of Hidalgo held the first official Pulque Festival that took place on January 12 and 13 in the community of Bondho, municipality of San Salvador, in the Central Mexico state of Hidalgo.
In a statement, the agency stressed that in the event different varieties of “curados” were presented, as well as maguey products, crafts and cultural, religious and artistic events. There was also a traditional fireworks show.
In this regard, Noé Cruz Maldonado, director of Agriculture of San Salvador said that there are about 600 people who are dedicated full time to the production of pulque, since there are 500 hectares of maguey
in the municipality, and seeds are still harvested to re-plant more specimens.
He added that 40 producers also make crafts with the maguey and 500 people sell this ancestral drink in the region.
For his part, Eduardo Javier Baños Gómez, Hidalgo’s State Secretary of Tourism said that during the first Pulque Festival, attendees also had the chance to try a variety of regional gastronomic delicacies such as rabbit, barbacoa and diverse fauna that exists in the Valle del Mezquital.
He added that this initiative is aimed at boosting the tourism activity in the municipality and recalled that the 150th anniversary of the founding of the state of Hidalgo is approaching, so it is important that the municipalities of the state come together in order to organize a major civic celebration.
