Endangered species for sale at $500 pesos in downtown León

In the downtown area of Leon, right in front of the Aldama Market, there are stands that offer exotic birds for sale, despite the fact that most of these animals are considered endangered species such as yellow-breasted hawks and parrots.

For example, on Calle Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, at the corner with Ignacio Comonfort, a street vendor sells cardinals, zeniths, goldfinches, canaries, and sometimes even hawks. The poor distressed birds can be heard at a considerable distance from the point of sale.

In a tour through the area surroundings the Estrella and Aldama Markets, it was found that these animals are sold for 500 pesos each; most of the people who buys them, do not have the slightest idea of how to take care of them, and in many cases the birds die in captivity after a few weeks.

In this regard, the City Councilman, Alfonso Orozco, stated that the situation is serious, however mentioned that it is the federal government responsibility to solve this ecological crime and to carry out actions to stop the sale of these animals that are endangered species.

“We in the municipal Presidency have to report the situation, and we also have to create a number for their complaint, and then send it to the corresponding authorities,” the councilor concluded.
