Dissolution of the Tourism Promotion Council has been approved

CDMX (TYT Newsroom). – The House of Representatives approved in general and in particular terms the reforms and provisions of the General Law of Tourism for the disincorporation of the Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico (Consejo de Promoción Turística de México: CPTM), and ordered its dissolution and liquidation.

The bill received 284 votes in favor, 157 against and 5 abstentions. So, it passes to the Senate of the Republic for discussion and voting.

Articles 3, section V; 38, 39, 40 and 41 of this norm are repealed and new amends to article 4, section II specify that it will be the responsibility of the Executive (Lopez Obrador) through the Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR), to promote and coordinate Mexico’s tourism activity nationally and internationally.

Since its creation, the council was assigned a budget through the “Expenditure Budget” of the Federation each year. The arguments of Lopez Obrador and its party Morena with majority in Congress bases on a “perspective of austerity and budgetary efficiency”.

During the session, Congresswoman Martha Zamudio of Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) argued that the disappearance of the agency would put the tourism industry at risk, since promotion spending is an investment. However, Marta Dekker, of the Labor Party (PT), explained that tourism promotion will continue to be carried out through the SECTUR.

If the bill is approved by the Senate and the decree is published, it is established that the council will keep its legal personality only for the purposes of dissolution and liquidation. The CPTM must meet within thirty days in order to approve the dissolution and appoint its liquidator.

In December last year, SECTUR announced the liquidation of the agency responsible for promoting the country, along with its 21 offices abroad. The CPTM had among its tasks the organization of the Tianguis Turístico de México, an event that brings together buyers of services and tourist attractions interested in the country.
