On Thursday October 17th, Culiacán, Sinaloa, was the epicenter of a prolonged shooting between alleged members of the Sinaloa cartel and Mexican security forces, who had just captured Ovidio Guzmán López, son of drug trafficker Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. Hours later, the government decided to release the suspect, “in order to safeguard lives”, as president Loez Obrador declared on Thursday October 18th.
Alfonso Durazo, the Secretary of Public Safety and Protection confirmed that federal forces located Ovidio Guzmán López in a home in Culiacán, and added that “the operation was suspended” to safeguard the integrity of the city’s inhabitants.

So far, the Mexican authorities have not offered a balance of victims.
This remarkably violent episode occurs in the same week that a confrontation between armed civilians and the Army in the state of Guerrero left 15 dead; as well as the massacre of at least 13 police officers in the state of Michoacán, which happened on Tuesday Oct. 15th, just a couple of hours after the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented an official report showcasing figures of their “security strategy”.
Organized crime is totally out of control, surpassing the power of the three levels of government (Executive, Legislative and Judicial), and president AMLO does not acknowledge nor accept the severity of the situation.
