Santiago Carbonell Foundation-Museum: an elegant space dedicated to a master of romanticism

This small museum is filled with the artwork of Santiago Carbonell and has been visited by more than 20,000 people since its opening in 2014. Carbonell was born in Ecuador, but emigrated to Mexico in 1986 after studying the arts in BarcelonaSpain, for several years. He has lived most of his life in Querétaro, Mexico, where he is also an art professor. Living in Querétaro was a driving factor behind establishing this museum in the center of the city.

The collection of artwork was personally selected by Carbonell from his own stock. It covers a wide range of motifs. Keep an eye out for a painting vandalized by Carbonell with the number 43 hidden among the dark corridors of the museum.

The museum’s elegant and minimalist architecture itself is a respite from the baroque nature of the city. While the museum is a tiny space, it invites visitors to reflect on their interpretations amid the tranquility of the works of art.

The paintings usually change every season and sometimes the terrace is open for events. The Santiago Carbonell Foundation Museum also promotes upcoming and new artists.
