The people will decide on the Maya Train project: AMLO

On Sunday November 10th, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declared that there will be a public consultation next month, to continue with the construction of the Maya Train in Southeast Mexico or discard the project.

“We are going to carry out a citizen consultation, and we will respect the people’s decision. The voting will take place next month,” said the President.

“I do not want to start a project without the people’s consent, I want this project to be completed before my term ends, because I am not going to re-elect.” AMLO said.

The President gave as an example the injunctions that were submitted to stop the construction works of the Santa Lucia airport in Mexico City.

“They tried to stop us, but they couldn’t and now they are very angry at us,” AMLO said.

“That’s why I’m warning them, I know that even if they disguise themselves as environmentalists, we know who our opponents are”, López Obrador continued.

The president explained that the Maya Train is a project created for the benefit of the people in Southeast Mexico, and the government does not want to damage the environment or affect cultural wealth.

During his visit to the community of Calakmul, Campeche, López Obrador insisted that the Maya Train project seeks to generate jobs for the residents of the areas which the railroad will cross.

“The environment is not going to be harmed, the archeological sites are not going to be affected, on the contrary, what we want is to promote the great artistic and cultural wealth that exists in this region, and that the tourism industry can provide jobs and income to the people of Calakmul, and the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula, ” the president concluded during his speech before hundreds of people in Calakmul, Campeche.
