San Miguel de Allende.- With the union of the provincial municipality of Cusco, Perú, and the city of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato; the nations of Mexico and Peru are now brothers. The solemn act of signing the twinning between the cities of Cusco and San Miguel de Allende, both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, took place in the Town Hall of the Municipal Palace.

The meeting was headed by the municipal president, Jesús Gonzalo González Rodríguez and Víctor Germán Boluarte Medina, mayor of the Provincial Municipality of Cusco.

“Today, in the understanding of the twinning of these two cities that share similarities, mission, culture, and lifestyle, we are glad to announce that San Miguel and Cusco, Peru, are sister cities now,” said Gonzalo González.

Remotely, María Cristina Emigdia Ruiz, representative of the Mexican Embassy in Peru, assured that the twinning agreement signed by both cities will allow the strengthening of ties of cooperation and friendship between the two nations.

The ambassador of Peru in Mexico, Julio Hernán Garro Gálvez stressed that this union has the potential to make these two important tourist destinations stand out in the world, after the pandemic, thanks to the shared cultural base that will allow the development of tourism.

Víctor Germán Boluarte highlighted that Peru and Mexico share a pre-Columbian past and miscegenation that, until now, is full of material and immaterial wealth, which is why this twinning represents a reason for special recognition and commemoration.

Gonzalo González honored the memory of Felipe Cossío del Pomar, a Peruvian historical figure who arrived in San Miguel de Allende in 1927 and made an important contribution to promoting art in this city.

Likewise, he pointed out that with these actions San Miguel de Allende is projected before the eyes of the world by generating cultural and educational exchanges that promote tourism and achieve friendly relations between peoples, “consolidating it as a world destination, as an international benchmark and as the Best City in the World to visit ”.
