Tourism exceeds 8.3% of the Gross Domestic Product in Guanajuato and generates 1 out of every 10 jobs nationwide. This was said by the rector of the Technological University of San Miguel de Allende ( UTSMA ), Daniel Jiménez Rodríguez. During the inauguration of the second International Tourism Forum, the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato visited the premises.
The event brought together 23 universities from the subsystem that came to San Miguel de Allende from various parts of the Mexican Republic. Thus, they gathered at the La Casona convention center, where it will be valid until September 23.
Jiménez Rodríguez said that the world economy shows that world tourism collapsed by 4.7 billion dollars in 2020. This is according to the annual economic impact report of the World Tourism Organization. Also, in 2019, this industry generated 9.2 billion US dollars.
He indicated that in 2021 Mexico recovered 31 million international tourists. Although 46.1% less than before the pandemic, it still contributed 7.1% of the national GDP.
Daniel Jiménez pointed out that Guanajuato has 8.3% of GDP thanks to tourism. In addition, he said that last year San Miguel de Allende had 514 million tourists and 289 thousand occupied hotel rooms. This derived in 4.5 billion pesos in economic spill.
“We are a recognized state among the best in Mexico and the world, with 6 magical towns, two heritage cities, and 5 archaeological zones. We are constantly innovating and changing, but the most important thing is our people”, said María Guadalupe Robles, undersecretary of Tourism Promotion of the State Tourism Secretariat.
