KATAB guayaberas: a love story

For the Yucatecans, their rich culture is accompanied by centuries of deeply rooted and beloved traditions that are passed down from generation to generation.

That is the case of the KATAB brand. Yucatecan guayabera designers who have mixed the tradition of the centuries with modernity. To such an extent that behind each garment there is history, symbolism, culture, traditions. Effort, work, dedication, passion, inheritance, sight, hands, time… in a few words, behind each garment there is life.

KATAB is a word in Mayan. It means cross and it is its differentiating motif. The cross of its embroidery. The cross of their beliefs.

Katab integrates the concepts that they handle as a distinctive, unique and original brand. They were incorporated as a company in 1999 and each year since then, their brand and concepts have evolved. In the same way, they have adapted to the different challenges and needs of the market.

Alberto Rello Arteaga, founder and owner of Katan tells us:

“We created the brand “la Plaza del Recreo”. This concept was the first to merge, under one roof, handicrafts, clothing with and without handmade embroidery, jewelry, accessories and hats. Then, the design and the proposal in the guayaberas grew and developed.

In 2012 we created the brand “El Recreo” in order to differentiate more youthful garments and for 2017 we created Katab, with unique and differentiating characteristics. More special garments, with personality and character. Models with high and sophisticated design and quality standards, to advance and evolve on the path of excellence, innovation, service and the experience of wearing one of our famous designs, with the versatility of being used either at weddings, celebrations , vacations, public or private events. Any reason is the right one to wear a garment with such high values.

Nothing motivates us more than a customer living the maximum satisfaction of a unique experience when buying or receiving a garment from us. Take it out of its packaging, and use it. All aimed at the experience of wearing a guayabera that is above average and Katab exceeds all customer expectations.

Each of our pieces are made by the expert hands of our “embroidery teachers”. Women who are with us, who generation after generation have received from their mothers the ancient knowledge of Yucatecan embroidery, representing their mestizo culture, full of beauty and traditions.

Our garments carry the work of embroidery in the cross-stitch technique, also known as “counted thread” or “chuc bi chuy” in the Mayan language. The fabrics and finishes can be from the simplest to the most complex embroidery designs, with colorful flowers, birds or butterflies for special reasons or occasions.
