Mexico received 9.3 percent more international tourists last May than in the same month of 2022, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
3.26 million foreign tourists entered the country in the fifth month of 2023, compared to 2.98 million in the same period of the previous year, according to the report of the autonomous body.
The main annual upturn occurred in border tourists, which in May 2023 grew 23.6 percent to exceed 1.21 million people.
While those who arrived by plane rose 1.1 percent to 1.73 million.
On the other hand, last May, the total spending of international tourists increased 1.2 percent year-on-year, going to 2 thousand 128.4 million dollars from a previous figure of 2 thousand 104.2 million dollars.
In contrast, the average spending of each tourist decreased by 7.4 percent to $652.4 in May compared to $704.79 in the fifth month of 2022.
The data reflects a stabilization of the upward trend in tourism in Mexico, which had 38.3 million international tourists during 2022, 20.3 percent more than in 2021.
Foreign currency income from international visitors last year was 26 thousand 346.9 million dollars, more than 42 percent more than a year before.
The economy related to tourism in Mexico, which the Inegi calls the tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP), grew 14.4 percent in 2022.
Mexico was the third most visited country in the world in 2020, a temporary phenomenon that is attributed to flexible sanitary measures in tourist areas of the country amid COVID-19.
Before the pandemic, Mexico was consolidated in 2019 as one of the 10 most visited countries in the world, with more than 45 million international tourists who left 24,563 million dollars, an annual growth of 9 percent.
