RIP Oaxaca’s Guelaguetza icon Paulina Solís Ocampo

Professor Paulina Solís Ocampo, the choreographer of Flor de Piña, one of the iconic dances of the Guelaguetza, passed away on Sunday, July 9th.

The Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara, sent his condolences to her family through his social media, and the government of Oaxaca shared an obituary.

“I deeply regret the passing of Professor Paulina Solís and extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

The regional dance “Flor de piña” dates back to May 1958 when the then-governor, Alfonso Pérez Gasga, requested a choreography specifically for the score of “Flor de piña” by Samuel Mondragón. The choreography was meant to represent the Papaloapan region, one of the eight regions of Oaxaca, in the newly created Guelaguetza de los Lunes del Cerro.

Professor Paulina Solís was in charge of creating this choreography. She taught art education classes at the Francisco I. Madero school.
