President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) gave the starting signal on Friday, December 15th to the operation of the Maya Train, an emblematic infrastructure project of the current government, although experts say that it is still far from being fully operational and that the inauguration is hasty.
After dozens of protections, mobilizations, blockades, and even an ongoing investigation by international environmental associations, President López Obrador inaugurated – even with several stations under construction – sections 2, 3, and 4 of the Maya Train, these are the sections between Campeche and Cancún.
During the morning conference on Friday, December 15 at the San Francisco de Campeche station, the president assured that this is a historical event after the Mexican southeast was forgotten for more than 100 years,
“We are very happy to be here in Campeche on this truly historic day because we are inaugurating this stretch from Campeche to Cancun. It is a work that in its entirety comprises 1,554 kilometers. It is a magnum opus, we are not exaggerating if we say that there is no such work in the world today, and it was also achieved in record time,” said the president.
Another section, from Palenque to Cancún, will open at the end of December, and the rest of the routes will be in operation in February 2024, according to a statement by the Federal Government.
What was inaugurated this Friday includes 14 stations along 473 kilometers of track; 1,846 kilometers of rails, as well as 69.3 million cubic meters of earthworks.
During the event, it was learned that the government will permanently deploy more than 2,800 National Guard soldiers for the Maya Train security. The Maya Train will also feature 5 helicopters, drones, communication radios, and security cameras as part of the project.
