More than 900 people in Guanajuato reported being victims of extortion

In the report of extortion victims, October stands out as the month with the most cases reported, for a total of 101, followed by September with 96.

From January to November 2023, at least 908 people were victims of extortion in the state of Guanajuato, according to the report of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

In the month-by-month breakdown, the month of October stands out as it was when the most victims were reported, with a total of 101, followed by the month of September with 96, August with 94, March with 92, June with 85, May with 82, November with 80, February with 75, January and July with 70 extortion victims.

Compared to the victims reported during 2022, this is a considerable increase since 668 victims were reported throughout last year and only from January to November 2022 there were 573 victims of extortion in the entity.

In the case of 2022, in no case were there more than 100 victims per month, it was in March when the most aggrieved people chose to report with 84.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) points out that, in its National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Security (ENVIPE), the black figure for the crime of extortion in Guanajuato reached 95.3 percent.

The above means that out of every 100 cases of extortion, only five are formally reported to the authorities.

Some business organizations have acknowledged being victims of this crime, such as COPARMEX, which reported in the state of Guanajuato that 53 percent of affiliated companies were, at some point, victims of threats or attacks by organized crime groups, either vandalism, theft or extortion.
