Mexico City’s Citizen Security Secretariat reported the death of Carlos Manuel Urzúa, former Secretary of the Treasury in the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he was one of the first officials to resign from AMLO’s cabinet.
Through an information card, the SSC indicated that through the radio frequency, police officers were informed of an injured person in his home and, upon arrival, they interviewed a woman who reported that she heard a loud noise, went to see what was it, and saw Mr. Urzua lying at the bottom of the stairs with a blood stain on his head.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene diagnosed the 68-year-old man with no vital signs, so the police reported it to the corresponding Public Ministry agent for expert services.
His daughter, Laura Valverde, confirmed the death through a message on X, in which she described him as an “exemplary father and husband and prominent Mexican academic and economist.”
Urzúa, a native of Aguascalientes, had a degree in Mathematics from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, and a Mathematics PhD from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) of the National Polytechnic Institute, and he was a Doctor in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, USA.
In July 2019, Urzúa made public his resignation from AMLO’s cabinet where he served as Secretary of the Treasury, through a letter published on his X account, formerly Twitter, in which he expressed that among his reasons for leaving the cabinet were his “disagreements on economic matters” and on several of the decisions made by the federal executive.
Later, in October 2023, the opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez welcomed Urzúa to her campaign team, through a message from X, accompanied by a photograph of both.
The CDMX Prosecutor’s Office reported that it will not investigate the death of Carlos Urzúa, as they claim it was an accident.
