The municipal government shows no progress on the project announced in December by the federal government for an airport or airfield in San Miguel de Allende.
On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, Jorge Nuño Lara, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation, announced that the federal government was preparing to strengthen the national airport system through the creation of airports in San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato; Ensenada, Baja California; and Costa Alegre, Jalisco. During an appearance before the Lower House of Congress.
The official explained that strengthening measures were being implemented in the three aforementioned airports, which have requested resources to carry out investment studies, according to the Ministry of Finance.
At that time Nuño pointed out that in October 2023, Communications and Transportation handed over ten airports to the Mexican Army and announced the transfer of six more to the Navy, forming the Casiopea Airport Group with the airports of Ciudad del Carmen (Campeche), Ciudad Obregón (Sonora), Colima (Colima), Guaymas (Sonora), Loreto (Baja California), and Matamoros (Tamaulipas).
He insisted that in the airport area, a total investment of more than 60 billion pesos was planned, with 15,8 billion coming from the public sector and 44,2 billion pesos from the private sector.
However, the local government led by interim Laura González Hernández announced that the project is entirely federal; That is to say, the municipality does not have any type of progress or information about this project.
The project of an aerodrome or airport is not new. Since the government of Lucy Núñez (2009-2012) this initiative was already in place and a 1,900 meter runway was built.

This project has been praised by businessmen on the understanding that it could bring high-end tourism to San Miguel de Allende, but criticized by others, especially environmentalists, who consider it a risk for birds.
