The abuses of taxi drivers in Cancun are going viral, after a video in which a foreign tourist denounces a flagrant case of extortion.

Through his TikTok account, the young tourist of Canadian origin exposed a Cancun Airport taxi driver who tried to charge him one thousand US dollars (17 thousand Mexican pesos) to transfer him from terminal 4 to terminal 3 at the Cancun international airport, which which immediately seemed like abuse and extremely suspicious. A taxi ride that usually costs five US dollars.

Here is the testimony of Canadian tourist Xavier Cormier:

I was traveling to the airport going back to Montreal Canada at 2am Wednesday night / Thursday morning the 18th of April 2024 when I got set up by the taxi company from the airport and the security staff at Terminal 3.

They told me I could not stay there and need to pay another taxi ( from the airport! ) to go to Terminal 4 for 5$ which I did.

I was alone with the 2 security and there was only one taxi available when they start pressuring me to pay via Credit card.

I did not want to use my creidt card, but I had no other choice and could not walk between terminal (or so they told me).

After paying with my card and getting back in the Taxi for only 2 minutes, I realized the payment that went on my card was over $1,000 US dollars!

I was still in the car and the situation escalated at the Terminal 4 where I managed to get the attention of other tourists and travelers waiting for their flights.

When the taxi driver saw the security guard he tried to escape with me and my luggage in the car but I manage to jump in the front of the car and shift the transmission on Park which almost result in a car accident.

The airport security arrived just in time before situation got even more crazy. I filled a report number against the driver and the taxi airport.

I believe some of the cops and security guards over there where also part of the scam because they wanted me to go the police station to press charge against the driver but to only get rid of my story and all the proof I have against the scam system at the airport including Security and the Airport Taxi Company.

I believe that if I wouldn’t stop the car in time something even worst was waiting for me.

Are these scammers still working at the Cancun Airport?! If yes, help stop this corrupted system, and DO NOT TRAVEL TO MEXICO!

Throughout several videos, the young man identified as Xavier Cormier shows his annoyance and disappointment at the attempted extortion by a taxi driver who tries to charge him a large sum, however, upon realizing this, the tourist reproaches him and asks to speak to the police, while the driver does nothing more to ask him to pay for the trip.

Seeing that the airport authorities are approaching, the taxi driver tries to ignore the situation, while the young man continues to assure that Mexico is a country that is dangerous, and demands to speak with his embassy.

This fact adds to a long list of complaints from foreign citizens against taxi drivers in Cancún, Quintana Roo, whom they have reported for abusive charges, physical attacks and more.
