During the first quarter of 2024, an increase in the perception of insecurity among Mexicans was observed: 61% of urban residents consider that living in their area is dangerous. By gender, women perceive significantly more insecurity than men.
During the first quarter of 2024, there was an increase in the Mexican population’s perception of insecurity of 61.0% by those who reside in urban areas, who consider it unsafe to live there.
This record reflects a significant rebound, after the last quarter of 2023, Mexico reached minimum levels of insecurity perception. In this period it was 59.1%, according to figures from the National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU) of Inegi.
Of the cities analyzed in the country, it was observed that 18 showed changes in their inhabitants’ perception of insecurity: in 14 it increased, and only in four it decreased.
If the data is broken down by gender, a substantial perception difference is also observed between women and men. Nationally, 54 out of every 100 men believe their location is dangerous, while for women the figure is 66 out of every 100.
The perception of insecurity includes the entire population that is afraid of being a victim of a crime. Despite the rebound recorded at the beginning of 2024, the perception of insecurity remains low compared to the records of the last 10 years.

Public places, the most dangerous
Mexicans consider public spaces to be the most unsafe. At the ATMs located on public roads, 7 out of 10 Mexicans feel unsafe, while 6 out of 10 consider that public transportation is unsafe.
Other dangerous public spaces for Mexicans are the bank, the streets they walk through, the markets, and recreational parks in their locality.
It stands out that the perception of insecurity on roads and highways has grown significantly in recent quarters; Half of the population considers them dangerous. They also became the third most unsafe space, according to Mexicans.
