Accidents related to the consumption of intoxicating beverages have increased in recent years in San Miguel de Allende.

In 2022, five accidents attributed to alcohol consumption were recorded, a figure that rose to fifteen in 2023. This year, in the first four months of 2024, sixteen incidents have already been recorded, indicating an obvious and worrying upward trend.

According to a report from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), the José Manuel Zavala bypass has been the main scene of these accidents.

During the first four months of 2024, a total of 164 accidents have been recorded on this road. In previous years, the figures were 398 accidents in 2022 and 410 in 2023.

Collisions with vehicles, motorcycles, fixed objects, and rear-end collisions are the most common types of accidents, although run-overs, road departures, and passenger falls have also been reported, which are attended to by the Municipal Police, the Fire Department, the Red Cross and Civil Protection paramedics.

The rescue forces have provided first aid to at least 265 people injured on the José Manuel Zavala bypass in recent years, regretting the unfortunate death of 7 people due to these incidents.

The hours from 7 to 8 in the morning and from 6 to 7:30 in the afternoon are the most frequent times in which these road incidents occur, according to SSC reports.

The most common causes of these accidents include failure to keep distance, excessive speed, lack of caution, and lack of respect for road signs.
