Salamanca makes the headlines again with bad news.

The leader of the “Tierra Mojada” musical band Virgilio Ruiz García from Oaxaca, was assassinated in Salamanca, Guanajuato, after a feature presentation in that muncipality.

According to municipal police information, the band had finished a community show on Sunday August 6, just a few minutes after midnight.

At the end of the show, they retired on their bus, and while circulating on the state road, they were intercepted by several individuals, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

The subjects began to throw stones against the vehicle, and then they opened fire with guns. The bus stopped and these men tried to break into the vehicle, allegedly to steal the musicians’ instruments and belongings.

One of the shots fired hit Virgilio Ruiz, who died shortly after being admitted to a hospital in the city of Salamanca.

According to El Universal, Mexico City based newspaper, the aggressors opened fire because the band did not want to please them with a song during the concert.

The band became internationally famous recently when it participated with singer and recording artist Lila Downs in her last musical production, which was a tribute to Mexican historic XIX century president Benito Juárez, who by the way, was also from Oaxaca.
