“Guanajuato has a list of 198,528 children of ages 5-17 in child labor”, said the State Delegate of Labor and Social Welfare (Secretaría de Trabajo y Prevención Social: STPS), Angel Arellano Espinoza.
The Delegate noted that most of these children work in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and informal businesses, where they are not questioned about their age (especially in the informal sector).
“According to statistical data recorded in Guanajuato almost 190,528 children and young people are in child labor, data thrown by INEGI in 2015,” said Arellano Espinoza.
Child labor in Guanajuato occupies 4th place nationally, just under Colima, Guerrero and Puebla, this is a big challengethat state authorities need to work on and resolve.
In order to work, young people from 15 to 17 years of age must have permission from parents or guardians; however, in some cases it is their own parents who make them work, a problem that has not been eradicated in Mexico.
“The legal age to work in Mexico is 18, however children from 15-17 can work with a special permit from their parents. They can apply for this permit to the proper authorities, but this should be done without neglecting school” concluded the delegate of the STPS.
