The culture of organ and tissue donation grows in Guanajuato state, but there still a lot to do on the subject nationwide.

A 33 year old salesman who died in an accident became the organ donor number 28 so far this year in the state of Guanajuato.

His name was Saul Tavera, and his family decided to donate his organs to improve the quality of life of four patients awaiting transplants.

The  Ministry of Health of Guanajuato (Secretaría de Salud de Guanajuato), reported that Saul Tavera was a salesman and the father of a one year old baby; he was runned down by a motor vehicle and died from injuries provoked by the accident.

Saul donated his kidneys, corneas and part of his skeletal muscle tissue. The organ donation and procurement took place at the General Hospital of San Miguel de Allende in the early hours of Thursday May 19.

The State Center for Transplants activated the “potential donation protocol” once Saul’s brain death was officially declared. Members of their staff talked to the family explaining how a donor is able to “give life through death”, and Saul’s relatives gave their authorization for the donation.

With this donation, Guanajuato registers 28 donors so far this year, generating 42 kidneys, 44 corneas, 7 livers and a heart plus nine procured skeletal muscle tissues, making a total of 102 organs and tissues generated.
