Laurie and Lisa Sandefer, writers for SandeFerSanMiguel and full-time residents of San Miguel de Allende bring us this practical list of places where you can find organic groceries in town.
- SATURDAY ORGANIC MARKET (TIANGUIS ORGÁNICO)
Every Saturday, there is an organic “farmer’s market” on a portion of the vacant property owned by the Rosewood. Vendors there sell fresh produce, hand-made cheeses and sauces, raw seafood and poultry, baked goods, oils, condiments, and more. There is always some kind of live music, and there are several vendors who sell delicious hot meals – so it’s a popular place for breakfast and lunch too. The Saturday Organic Market is less than 5 minutes from Casa GGG.
Hours: 9:00 to 2-ish, Saturdays only
Address: Corner of Ancha de San Antonio & Cardo (enter on Ancha de San Antonio)

NATURA
Natura is a small store where we buy local organic produce and organic chicken. They also sell artesanal dairy products including raw organic cheeses, yogurts and kefirs; artesanal pastas, sauces & condiments; and a selection of
ready to eat organic foods from their own kitchen (like salsas, soups, condiments and breads). They prepare a variety of specialty items for gluten-free, sugar-free, raw, vegetarian, and vegan diets.
Address: Ancha de San Antonio 39 (across from the Instituto)

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (closed Sundays)

VIA ORGANICA
Via Organica is located in a groovy, art-y barrio on the north side of San Miguel (in Colonia Guadalupe). The store is much bigger than Natura and they have the largest selection of organic foods in San Miguel. They sell produce, meats, cheeses and other dairy products (or substitutes), packaged products, condiments and many items made in-house (like salsas, condiments, baked goods, etc.). They also have a small organic restaurant in the back. Via Organica is owned by a non-profit co-op that also has an organic farm. We like to support them. However, because it is a co-op, the place is not well staffed (the employees do not seem very helpful or interested). When we have time, we usually walk to Via Organica and take a cab home. The store is a little difficult to find, though – so you might want to take a cab the first time, or if you’re in a hurry.
Address: Margarito Ledesma 2
Hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily

QUANDO
Cuando is a small store about 5 minutes south of Casa GGG that carries a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Other than the Saturday Organic Market, it is the closest place to Casa GGG where you can pick up fruits and veggies. The store is next door (on the south side) to Pemex
