The governor of Guanajuato, Miguel Marquez Marquez made comments regarding the recent tragic homicides in the state. Stating that violence has not affected state residents directly. Marquez and local officials have assured that the fatal victims are linked to organized crime, arguing that criminal groups only attack each other.
Despite this statement, it has been documented that in several cases, the victims did not have a criminal activity record. For example, a woman who was shot at a shop in Colonia Ampliación San Francisco; a locksmith in Boulevard Pradera, and the owner of a motel located in the Libramiento Norte, all of them were inocent residents of León, Guanajuato.
“Who has a crooked life ends up badly,” declared the governor.
When he was asked whether the presence of the National Gendarmerie will help to reduce the number of homicides in the state, Marquez Marquez said: “Fortunately, this is not an issue that affects the citizenship directly. It is just a war between criminal groups, we do not need to be very smart to know that these people will end their lives badly”.
Only during the month of June 2016, 88 murders were recorded in the state of Guanajuato; 21 of them were committed in the city of Leon, one of the most violent streaks of this year.
Marquez emphasized that the presence of the National Gendarmerie is not the solution to the insecurity in Guanajuato, but it is part of a great effort featuring the collaboration of the Mexican Army, the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) and Federal Police which has resulted in more arrests.
