LEÓN, Gto .- From Friday 18 to Monday 21, November, most hotels in the city of León will increase their rates, and in some cases up to six times their normal price! This might be due to “The León International Balloon Festival 2016 (FIG)” and El buen fin” (the Good Weekend), events that attract a good number of tourists.

Since there is absolutely no regulation in this city to control the increase in accommodation tariffs, hoteliers are free to rise their rates at will, depending on their own projections.

According to the website ‘Despegar.com’, which gathers information of different hotels in the city, these are some examples of the excessive increase of accommodation rates in León:

For Saturday, November 19,“Holiday Inn León” went from its normal rate of $1,680 pesos ($84 USD) to $6,851 pesos ($343 USD) per night, no taxes included.

Another case is the “Real de Minas Express hotel”, which its normal rate increased from $870 pesos ($44 USD), to $6,611 pesos ($331 USD dollars) per night; and the Real de Minas León went from $848 pesos ($43 USD), to $3,813 pesos ($190 USD).

Those hotels are located away from the Metropolitan Park, and they usually visited to avoid the traffic jam that occurs in the surroundings of the Festival.

A few days before the FIG, several tourist websites show an increase of hotel room rates of up 40%, and many of them are aready sold out for the weekend.

There are other websites, such as Airbnb, which offer the possibility of renting houses or apartments per night, with considerably lower rates than the hotel. The Airbnb platform is becoming more popular, due to the unreasonable increase of rates at hotels during peak season worldwide.
