“The Senate of the Republic will begin with the process to buy the Theatre of the Republic (El teatro de la República), located in the city of Querétaro, where the Mexico’s Political Constitution was promulgated in 1917″, said the President of the Board, Pablo Escudero.

Escudero explained that he will be visiting Querétaro on Wednesday, November 30, accompanied by Senators Emilio Gamboa Patron, Roberto Gil Zuarth and Enrique Burgos García, in order to sign the contract for the purchase of “Teatro de la República”, formerly known as “Teatro de Iturbide”.

With the purchase, the property would be part of the material goods of the Senate of the Republic; a space where “the Constituents had very important debates, and has a very important historic value.”

Escudero continued: “We propose to close the sale before the commemoration of the Centennial of the Constitution, next February 5”.

“The President of the Senate as well as the Board of Trustees are all convinced that “Teatro de la República” must be the property of all Mexicans, since it is a historic building that needs to be preserved as heritage,” he said.

“Besides, the federal government is analyzing the possibility of building a museum and/or virtual library on the premises, a project that would be conducted with a team of experts and museographers”, said Senator Pablo Escudero Morales.

The senator pointed out: “there is an appraisal of the Theater of the Republic for 100 million pesos; and we hope that the payment can be made on the month of January, in one exhibition”.

The president of the Board of Directors said that between 25 and 30 million pesos would be used for the maintenance and remodeling of the property.

“We have sent a letter to the Queretaro Congress because this transaction requires their authorization. The letter was sent, and everything is in process,” Escudero concluded.

The “Teatro de la República” is currently owned by the Josefa Vergara foundation that will use the proceeds from the sale for an educational program aimed at children with disabilities.
