LEÓN, Gto .- The state of Guanajuato holds the third place regarding the population of prisoners accused of femicide with 62 inmates imprisoned for this crime, according to the National Census of Government and Public Security Penitentiary System 2016 (Censo Nacional de Gobierno, Seguridad Pública y Sistema Penitenciario Estatales 2016), published by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía INEGI).

The number of prisoners in Guanajuato for this crime doubled in one year, from 30 defendants in the 2015 census to 62 in 2016.

Some of these criminals were initially accused of intentional homicide on a woman, but in most cases, the judge reclassified the crime as femicide after reviewing the evidence obtained by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is noteworthy that 11 of the 32 Mexican states do not have a single prisoner for this crime: (Baja California Sur, Baja California, Estado de México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Yucatan and Zacatecas).
