More ceviche, por favor!

Fresh fish and seafood prepared with lime juice, avocado, tomato, onion, and spice is a staple in many coastal towns. For me, there is something extremely satisfying about eating tortilla chips and ceviche while overlooking a spectacular blue sea of ocean waters.  Ceviche, originally from Peru, may explain the international explosion of Peruvian restaurants. During the past twelve months of travel, I’ve indulged in my fair share of ceviche and am here to share my top 6 favorite spots to enjoy this seafood dish.

1- Mama’s Fish House – Maui, Hawaii

Mama’s Fish House is an island favorite, just outside of charming Paia in Maui. The palm-tree lined shoreline is a perfect view while sitting at the bar. The menu tells a story, where the fish was caught and by whom, and the ceviche is heavenly. Reservations are a must at Mama’s, however if you are traveling solo, you may get lucky enough to find an open spot to dine at the bar.

2- Muelle de Sisal – Sisal, Yucatán

The northwestern shores of the Yucatán Peninsula is home to the off-the-beaten-path fishing village of Sisal and restaurant Muelle de Sisalboth hold a special place in my heart. Paired with views of palapa umbrellas, white sand, and the sea, the fried octopus ceviche here is some of the best ceviche.

3- The Hook Up – Los Suenos, Costa Rica

Located at the beautiful Los Suenos Marina Beach Club, The Hook Up serves up a 270 degree view of the marina with their rock shrimp ceviche. This area is known for sport fishing, surfing, and the monkees in nearby Manuel Antonio park, however the shrimp ceviche should be on the list to add to this location’s enticement.

3- The Wave Kitchen & Bar – Vero Beach, Florida

This celebrity owned (Gloria Estefan) beach resort of Cose d’ Este is hidden in the quaint coastal town of Vero Beach, Florida and dishes up some top notch ceviche. (The kind that you can’t forget and have to recommend.) This Vero Beach resort is a place to rejuvenate, and the ceviche is divine at The Wave Kitchen & Bar.

5- Cafe Turri – Valparaiso, Chile

Sophisticated art is served at this local favorite in Valparaiso, Chile. The beach town was home to the famous poet, Pablo Neruda, and I would like to think Cafe Turri’s recipe for the conger eel cheek and chilean shrimp ceviche that are influenced by his romantic words. This restaurant is where charm meets elegance, and ceviche is part of the love story.

6- Fred’s House – Cancun, Mexico

As one of the best fresh seafood restaurants (oyster bar included) in Cancun, Fred’s House serves an incredible Shrimp and Octopus Ceviche. With a little spice of jalapeno paired with fresh oregano, onion, and avocado, this dish complements the ambience of low lighting and views of Cancun’s lagoon.
