Violent Easter weekend in Guanajuato

CELAYA, Gto – On the afternoon of Saturday April 15, criminal groups killed 13 people in different attacks carried out in the municipalities of Jerécuaro and Tarimoro, located in southeast Guanajuato (near the stateline with Michoacan).

According the a report issued by the Preventive Police (Policia Preventiva), the first attack occurred around 4:00 p.m. in a cockfight that was taking place in a property located on Cuauhtémoc Street in the community of Salto de Peña, municipality of Jerécuaro, when four subjects using long and short weapons entered the place and opened fire against dozens of people who were watching the cockfight; leaving 4 dead and a total of 18 seriously injured .

Moments later, Red Cross personnel arrived on site to provide medical attention and the survivors who were taken to different hospitals and medical facilities.

The Attorney General’s Office reported 3 more people dead, two of them in a private hospital in Apaseo El Alto, identified as 32-year-old Ricardo Ortiz, 24-year-old Miguel Ángel Galván, and 25-year-old Miguel Vega, who died in the community hospital (Centro de Salud) in the same city.

Jorge Gómez Morado, Director of Specialized Investigation of the PGJE, said in a press conference on Sunday April 16, that seven more people (all adults) resulted injured and are still hospitalized in “Apaseo El Alto”, while another eight were hospitalized in Celaya. Five of them are reported in critical condition.

A second incident took place at Fidel Ángel Ramírez Street in the municipality of Tarimoro, according to witnesses, six men aboard a Mazda pickup truck started firing into a blacksmith business located on that street, but other people who were in a grocery store located a few steps away also resulted injured.

The perpetrators fled the scene, after killing four people that were inside the smithy and one more person who was walking into the store nearby.

The municipal police reported that five other people were wounded by gunshots, including a 29-year-old woman who died later while she was receiving medical attention.

It should be noted that no one was arrested in relation with these criminal actions.
