“Calaca de Flores” is the latest three-dimensional collaborative art quilt designed and stitched by the SMA Quilters. Hundreds of fabric flowers were cut out, then stitched and beaded into the shape of a Calaca, one of the iconic symbols of Day of the Dead.
It was created as a fundraiser for Ojalá Niños and will be sold by silent auction during the group’s upcoming month-long show at Café Muro. The colorful wallhanging, which is 37” wide x 43” long, was exhibited at the recent Festival of Quilts at the Poliforum in Leon where it was awarded Third Place, Viewers Choice!
The SMA Quilters invite you to the opening reception for their show and sale on Sunday, October 1 @ 2 – 4 pm at Café Muro (Calle de San Gabriel 1, SMA). A variety of calaca art quilts created by the SMA Quilters and whimsical calaca-related items created by the teachers and kids of Ojalá Niños will be available for purchase from 9 am – 4 pm every day (except Wednesdays) during the month of October.
