How can any place possibly bear the weight of being named the best city in the world, and by such a prestigious arbiter of taste as Condé Nast Traveler magazine?
This exact “burden” was recently put on San Miguel de Allende, in the central heartland of Mexico. While “best of” lists are certainly arbitrary, it’s understandable why this stunning city, with its colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, great restaurants, and indigenous-art-filled galleries, would find its way atop any number of lists.
If it were a hotel, San Miguel de Allende would present a perfect mix of small-town charm and cosmopolitan flair.

It also presents an admirable and amicable balance between locals and foreigners. And, oh yes, in 2008 it also found itself on another list—it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
