Few of us know the history of our beloved Parque Juarez, and no one knows the future, which is up to us to create. Come to Rotary Tuesday, November 7, to hear Sanmiguelense Laura Rodriguez Torres of Amigos del Parque share the interesting history of the largest green space in Centro, and how we need to band together to form its future for the benefit of us all.
Rotary will meet at Hotel Mision at 12:30 p.m., free and in English.
Juárez Park was created to connect the neighborhoods of Lavaderos del Chorro, Guadiana, Ojo de Agua, Cañada de los Aguacates y San Antonio as a center of life.
Dr. Ignacio Hernandez Macías was the municipal president at the time, who managed to convince to the owners around the park to get help him assemble the three hectares that had been orchards, where they planted threes such as cedars and lots of lilies, among other horticultural delights.
The park’s architectural structure maintained the elegance and the European-inspired public walks built in Mexico in the times of President Porfirio Diaz. The grand opening was in 1904.
In 1916 it was named Parque Juarez in honor of President Benito Juarez.
San Miguel de Allende is today one of the most recognized cities in the world for its colonial style, multiculturalism and unique mix old and new. Amigos del Parque wants to master plan Parque Juarez to remain a vibrant and relevant part of the San Miguel landscape.
It is leading this initiative with other nonprofits such as Amigos de la Presa and the Audubon Society to ensure the respect of such public spaces.
