“Mexican federal forces detained Ángel Humberto Chávez Gastélum and his son, the first leader of a criminal organization that is one of the most wanted drug traffickers in the United States”, Querétaro’s governor, Francisco Domínguez, informed on Wednesday November 7.
Agents of the Mexican Navy, the Federal Police and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) stormed at midnight on Tuesday at the Mochomo’s restaurant, in the city of Querétaro, to apprehend Chávez Gastélum and his son.
The strong mobilization, which involved more than 20 units of various corporations, caught the attention of Queretaro residents, as it included the closure of one of the side lanes of Boulevard Bernardo Quintana, one of the city’s main roads.
After the operation, one of the employees of the restaurant told the local media that seven people were arrested during the raid.
“Until now, we know that federal forces, the Gendarmerie, the Navy, the Attorney General’s Office, Interpol, apparently detained Mr. Gastélum and his son, who reside in the state of Sinaloa, but they were detained at a restaurant here in Queretaro,” said Governor Dominguez.
It was detailed that the arrest was made for the purpose of extradition to the United States, where the Chavez Gastélum organization coordinated large-scale drug distribution business. The detainee is also accused of at least two homicides.
