San Miguel de Allende: First two weeks as “American Capital of Culture”

“The municipality of San Miguel de Allende, in the state of Guanajuato, is today the American Capital of Culture, and will be until Dec. 31st,  2019”, reported on Jan 1st, the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals.

In this framework and through a voting process, seven places were chosen as “Treasure of the Cultural Heritage of San Miguel de Allende”, which have been included in the Representative List of the “Treasures of the World” Cultural Heritage Organization.

  1. The Parish of San Miguel Arcángel and its historical temples
  2. The Sanctuary and House of Spiritual Exercises of Jesus Nazareno de Atotonilco;
  3. The Festivity of San Miguel Arcángel
  4. The Festival of the Lord of the Conquest
  5. The Historical Districts;
  6. Cañada de la Virgen Archaeological Zone;
  7. Popular Art (Wool and Brass)

The mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Luis Alberto Villarreal, and the president of the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals, Xavier Tudela, signed the Appointment Agreement.

The objective of the campaign “7 Treasures of Cultural Heritage of San Miguel de Allende”, launched by the government of San Miguel de Allende and the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals, is to promote and disseminate the cultural heritage of this city in a didactic way, pedagogical and playful, besides motivating the visit to the selected “treasures”.

The strategy also seeks to establish new tourist routes that allow visitors to get in contact with the rich heritage of San Miguel de Allende, and promote citizen participation.

With the election of San Miguel de Allende as the American Capital of Culture 2019, Mexico leads the number of designations of cultural cities, with five; followed by Brazil with four and Chile with four. Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela have one each..

The American Capital of Culture (www.cac-acc.org), created in 1998, aims to promote inter-American cultural integration and contribute to a better knowledge among the peoples of the Americas, with respect to their national and regional diversity.
