If you really want to know what “Semana Santa” in San Miguel is all about, you need to attend this presentation by Charlotte Bell.
As we approach Easter Sunday, there are few observances as special as the events leading up to Easter than that special week in San Miguel de Allende called Semana Santa. And there are few people as knowledgeable about the week’s multitude of Semana Santa observances as local author Charlotte Bell. Over the years Charlotte has conducted a lecture and slide presentation that gives residents and visitors complete information on the Santa Semana celebrations. It is indeed a very special time to be in San Miguel de Allende. In her own words, Charlotte details her presentation:
“People come from all over Mexico and the world to experience Semana Santa in San Miguel. Countless processions and other unique occurrences happen during this time.
Many of the events are ancient and have historical significance but without information, they are just strange occurrences. You will learn about San Miguel’s very own saint maker, the late Genero Almanza. She will tell you about the storeroom of angels for the Procession of Santo Entierro on Good Friday. You will learn about Padre Felipe Neri de Alfaro, creator of Atotonilco, who would walk barefoot seven miles into San Miguel carrying a heavy cross on Good Friday.”
Because Charlotte has other commitments in the United States this month and can not be in San Miguel, she has produced a video presentation for the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel that we will show on Tuesday, April 9th. Despite the fact that the presentation is video instead of in person, it will be the only Charlotte Bell Semana Santa presentation this year. The knowledge you will gain will increase your understanding and appreciation of Holy Week in San Miguel. Following the presentation, Charlotte’s book “Tears from the Crown of Thorns” will be available for sale. The book contains photographs, history, and information about Semana Santa in San Miguel.
