Facebook, Instagram and Whattsapp were offline for many users around the world yesterday Wednesday since early morning, with the greatest number of reports coming along the east and west coasts of the United States, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The problem spread from about 0800 hours EDT, with users reporting an inability to access their timelines, create posts or even log in at all.

We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Instagram has tweeted a return message, Facebook  has yet to tweet  confirmation of its return to stable uptime but so far it seems to be accessible in Mexico and some areas of the US, so it looks like Zuckerberg´s tech support has fixed whatever caused the downtime.

Experts on the subject, think the reason of the Facebook breakdown could have been a border gateway protocol routing leak.

Routing internet traffic around the world relies on the border gateway protocol (BGP), which manages how internet traffic is routed the internet. BGP relies on trust between network operators to not send incorrect or malicious data. But mistakes happen, and malformed data can form a “route leak” that leads to confusion over where internet traffic should go, and can lead to massive outages.

In a BGP route leak, the routing announcements from an autonomous system that guides the information to its destination is inaccurate and is rejected by either receiver, the sender or an intermediary along the route that packet is supposed to travel.

Now, you know. So… how was your day without social networks?
