Yucatan now sanctions harassing women on the street or public places and other parts of the country join the initiative.
MÉRIDA, Yucatan. (Agencies) – After Yucatan set a national example with fines and arrests for people who harass women on the streets of Merida and municipalities, other states in the country did the same and already have or are in the process of establishing regulations.
As of Saturday, September 14, fines and arrests for people who sexually harass women on the streets went into effect in Mérida and the rest of the state. Fines and arrests of up to 36 hours for people who sexually harass women in the streets, public places and public transportation, as well as elderly or disabled people, went into effect.
This measure was very celebrated at national level, since this problem is in all the country due to the “machismo” and misogyny that many Mexicans still have as part of their “traditional” up bring.
As part of this national urgency to put an end to harassment, other parts of the country joined Yucatan´s initiative as an example, the municipality of Villa de Álvarez, Colima, already punishing that bad behavior with a 36 hours arrest, an economic fine of up to $ 2, 550 pesos and 36 hours of community work.
In Yucatan, the new “Law of Civic Culture” sanctions behaviors such as whistling to a woman and other sexual innuendos in public spaces. Fines go from $929 to $3,379 pesos, arrest of 13 to 24 hours and community work of 12 to 36 hours.
Among the other Mexican municipalities that join this regulation on this issue are. Guadalajara (Jalisco), Zapopan (Jalisco), Aguascalientes (capital of the state of Aguascalientes), Pabellón de Arteaga (Aguascalientes), Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Chiapas), Tlanepantla de Baz (State of Mexico), Ixtapan de la Sal (State of Mexico), Otzolotepec (State of Mexico) and Puebla de Zaragoza (capital of the state of Puebla).
There are still many municipalities in the country that require these measures, hopefully progress will be made soon
