In San Miguel de Allende, as in other cities in Mexico and the world, a tourist viewpoint has become a symbolic place thanks to the padlocks that loving couples place on its railings as a symbol of their unconditional love.
El Mirador El Caracol, also known by some as ‘El Mirador del Amor’, is located on the José Manuel Zavala bypass, at the Real exit to Querétaro.
The views from this place are stunning and, according to locals, it is a must-see stop for those visiting the heritage city.
The families and couples who go to the viewpoint, in addition to taking photographs, leave testimonies of their romanticism on the bars with padlocks on which they write messages with indelible markers of different colors.
On the padlocks of the Mirador you can read initials, nicknames, names, promises of love and dates.
This phenomenon, similar to the one known as the ‘Moccia phenomenon’ that began in Italy, where young people imitated a novel and placed padlocks with their partner’s names in symbolic places, is a reality in various cities in Guanajuato and Mexico.
Pedro, a seller of souvenirs and crafts, says that this trend of placing padlocks began approximately 8 years ago, comparing it to that of the ‘Bridge of Love’ in León, where since 2012 the placement of a wide variety of padlocks has also been recorded.
To keep their love inseparable, couples throw the key away after placing the lock, which prevents it from being removed conventionally.
Even tourists customize their style by leaving padlocks that bind chains or require a numerical combination to open. It is recommended to visit this place during the day to enjoy the panoramic view, although it is also impressive at night.
However, it is advisable to bring a jacket in case of cold weather.
You can walk there or park your vehicle a few meters from the viewpoint.
Now that you know this attraction in San Miguel de Allende, would you like to visit it with your partner and place a lock on the ‘Mirador del Amor’?
