The number of coronavirus infections is increasing worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned, adding that there is a risk of new mutations.

The WHO said that it is unlikely that the number of infected people will decrease soon.

Marija Van Kerkhove from the WHO said that data from their surveillance system, which is based on analyses in 84 countries, shows that the percentage of positive tests for the coronavirus has been increasing over several weeks.

“The positivity of the tests is above ten percent, but it varies by region,” said Van Kerkhove, reports Tanjug.

She added that Europe has over 20 percent of positive tests.

New waves of infection have been registered in America, Europe, and the Western Pacific, according to the WHO website.

“In recent months, regardless of the season, many countries have experienced a sudden increase in the number of cases of COVID-19, including the Olympic Games where at least 40 athletes tested positive,” Van Kerkhova said.

The WHO has called on governments to step up vaccination campaigns, ensuring that the highest-risk groups are vaccinated at least once every 12 months.
