Haidee Viviana Aceves Pérez obtained second place on Thursday, August 29, in the 100-meter backstroke class S2 race of women’s para-swimming and gave Mexico its first medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The Mexican athlete – originally from the state of Jalisco – won the silver medal in this event with a time of 2 minutes 21 seconds and 79 hundredths, with which she broke the American record and now holds the best mark at the continental level.
Haidee Aceves was just six hundredths away from tying the mark of Pin Xiu Yip, from Singapore, who was the winner of the gold medal; the Italian Angela Procida won the bronze medal.
The silver medal in Paris in 2024 is also the first Paralympic medal for an athlete from Jalisco. Previously, Aceves Pérez participated in the Paralympic Games in London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020; in these competitions, his best result was sixth place in the English capital during the 50-meter freestyle S3 class event.
