San Miguel bids farewell to José Ortiz Moya, renowned local photojournalist

José Ortiz ‘El Negro’ Moya, as he was known in San Miguel de Allende, stood out for his work as a photojournalist in the city of San Miguel.

On the morning of Wednesday, August 21, the news of the death of José Ortiz ‘El Negro’ Moya shocked San Miguel de Allende. The photographer, who for 40 years had captured the daily events of the municipality and the region, passed away at the age of 69.

‘El Negro Moya’, as he was widely known in San Miguel de Allende, stood out for his work as a photojournalist, receiving recognition from the population and municipal and state authorities, as he dedicated his life to documenting the history of the region through his lens.

Throughout his career, José Ortiz presented at least five photographic exhibitions in his hometown and received various recognitions for his career, in addition to being part of the book ‘101 Caras de San Miguel’, published in 2019, and the exhibition and publication entitled ‘Rostros de Nuestra Gente‘ which brought together brief biographies of relevant figures in the history of the municipality.

‘El Negro’ Moya finally passed away after nearly two months of health complications due to problems with his gallbladder and pancreas.

San Miguel residents, associations, politicians, and the media have expressed their affection, through social networks, for this San Miguel figure who leaves behind an important photographic legacy on the most relevant events in the municipality.
