Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has said on previous occasions that he is willing to negotiate with the United States government to exclude Mexico from the USMCA.

Speaking at a press conference, Poilievre said he would do whatever it takes to preserve Ottawa’s trade relationship with Washington.

“I only care about Canada, I want to put our country first. The United States is responsible for 60% of our trade. We have more trade with the United States than with the rest of the world combined. I will do whatever it takes to preserve and protect that relationship above all others.”

This controversial statement comes hours after US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he will apply 25 percent tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico.

Trump said he would apply the tariffs in retaliation for the flow of drugs and immigrants from both countries.
