Undersecretary of Tourism, Sebastián Ramírez Mendoza, reported that the Ministry of Tourism has joined, as an institutional member, the Ibero-American Network of Smart Tourist Destinations, which aims to generate alliances between actors from the public and private sectors and organizations that support the competitive and sustainable development of destinations, “to ensure that Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples,” as well as their communities, their products and services respond to the challenges of smart tourism.

This, he said, will allow Mexico to continue with the drive to create Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI), that is, sites that have a cutting-edge technological infrastructure that facilitates the interaction of tourists with the environment and improves the experience of visitors, as well as the quality of life of the population.

Ramirez Mendoza said that with the incorporation of Sectur into this network, Mexico is promoting the Smart Tourist Destinations model, which offers tourists a more enriching and personalized experience, through the use of digital services, such as mobile applications or interactive guides. This is thanks to the implementation of new-generation digital technologies such as Big Data or Artificial Intelligence.

He invited the tourist destinations of the states and municipalities of the country, interested in beginning their transition towards a smarter destination, to approach the Mexican Ministry of Tourism, where they can find assistance for the implementation of the DTI model, and guarantee sustainable, innovative, and accessible development.

He pointed out that this incorporation will also allow Mexico to participate in the exchange of information, good practices, and knowledge between destinations and organizations, and will allow access to databases and information for support, training, and capacity building.

The Ibero-American Network has more than 50 members from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Ecuador.
