US Attorney General issues memo calling for the “total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations” on instructions from President Donald Trump.

Within a week the National Security Division and Violent Crime and Organized Crime Section must jointly propose a standardized language to be used by federal prosecutors across the country to describe: Tren de Aragua, La Mara Salvatrucha, Cártel de Sinaloa and the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación in charging documents and search warrants.

The statement added that “on January 20, 2025, President Trump ordered the federal government to review national security and anti-drug trafficking strategies.

“This policy requires a fundamental change in its enforcement,” it said.

According to the memo, “the Asset Recovery Section will prioritize investigations, prosecutions, and asset forfeiture actions targeting cartel activities.”

The document concluded that “the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Office of Legal Policy, and the Office of Legislative Affairs are directed to evaluate and, if deemed appropriate, advocate for reforms. • “Permanently place fentanyl-related substances in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. • “Add xylazine, which has no legitimate human use and makes fentanyl even more lethal, to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act.

“Require serialization of pill press machines and critical machine parts to facilitate monitoring and investigation by law enforcement.”
