The municipality of Uriangato marks leadership in ephemeral art with the traditional “Eighth Night” through the International Meeting of Carpets, featuring an average 60 thousand visitors from Guanajuato as well as 5 thousand national and foreign tourists.

On October 2, carpet artists from the Republic of Malta and India, from the Kingdom of Belgium, as well as from the Colectivo de Chucho Callejero from maestro Jorge Corleto from Guatemala, Artesanos from Michoacán, and rugs from Uriangato, met in this municipality to put together the monument dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel.

This monument, which was exhibited in the Main Square of Uriangato from October 5 to 7, was made with flowers, sawdust and seeds; and represents the culture of the Uriangatenses towards the Patron Saint.

The tradition dates more than 52 years, according to Ana Rosa Aguilar Aguado, designer of the Monumental Carpet.

In the monument, a logo of Uriangato was seen on the left side, representing the first Meeting of Carpets. On the right side, the logo of Guanajuato was placed, symbolizing the second International Meeting, and how the state government, through the Ministry of Tourism, promoted art not only as a local tradition, but also as a major tourist attraction.

In the center, the monument has a huge heart, “we decided to put this figure because in our participation in Belgium they asked the delegation of that country why a tradition of a city as small as Uriangato managed to be on the stage of Ephemeral Art, and Belgium replied that Uriangatenses  know how to win the hearts of people, “explained the designer.

In August, the municipality of Uriangato, Guanajuato and Mexico, marked history, since they managed to be the city, state and country, that contributed with the central theme for the monumental carpet of flowers in The Great Plaza of Brussels, Belgium.

The governor of the state, Diego Sinhue; Teresa Matamoros Montes, Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato; Carlos Guzmán Camarena, municipal president of Uriangato; among other authorities were present at the event and toured the monumental carpet.
